America is still the place for Claude VonStroke

claude_vonstroke

For Claude VonStroke, America is still the place where his music is most accepted.

The DJ, who calls Detroit home, is based in San Francisco but despite playing his techno gigs all across the world especially in Europe he likes to return to his home base.

The owner of the dirtybird and Mothership labels admits that two years ago he wouldn’t have admitted that America is his major market and that he believes his homeland is ready for his dirtybird label music.

Most DJs do want to play their music closer to home he says.

While VonStroke admits that the myth of his home city is bit overblown he says that the city has one of the coolest vibes in the world and one which is different from anywhere else.

Detroit is also home of the soul music and the Motown labels as well as hip hop star Eminem.

The city recently filed for bankruptcy and is selling off just about everything from its parking metres to its art collection at the city’s Institute of Arts but VonStroke, who recently visited his home town, says most residents don’t even care about that.

Ryan O’Gorman: A season full of highs and lows

ryan_o_gorman

Ryan O’Gorman has had a brilliant season. The DJ says his high point is always doing what he loves Among this season’s top scores was playing at Space with We Love as well as the free parties and sharing good times with friends and loved ones.

In addition to his club gigs O’Gorman also helped Carl Craig who staged an event in Formentera over the summer.

He visited Apollonia at DC10 and also the Vitalik free parties and staged a party of their own “Shonky”.

The season wasn’t all fabulous however with some of the worst moments coming according to O’Gorman when he allowed himself to get absorbed into situations that are stressful and the complications that come from working on an island and in clubs.

The last gig the group did was closed down prematurely after neighbours called the police. The group packed up their stuff and left.

O’Gorman says the idea is to make sure that the environment is one in which people understand that the reason the event is on is for a shared experience and that it’s all about respect and not disturbing the surroundings.

Moderat ready to release second album

moderat

The Berlin techno super group Moderat is preparing to release its second album entitled II later  this year. The group, made up of Modeselektor with Sebastian Szary and Gernot Bronsert and Apparat (Sascha Ring). The trio has been working together for the last ten years after coming together to find ways to explore electronic music after meeting at a festival in Berlin.

One of the highlights of the new album, which was written in the dead of winter, is that all the beats were done from scratch using both sampled and re-sampled music from the studio – analog and looped.

The new album features synths, warm bass tones and rolling drum programming, as well as melancholy vocals. The group says it continues working together because of a shared past in the German city attending illegal parties following reunification.

In an interview with Electronic Beats, Moderat said that all the members worked on getting the album together. “Everybody did everything, it wasn’t like one person was the drum programmer and the other one was making the melodies. It’s really mixed,” said Sascha Ring. “We wanted to resample stuff and use it over and over again. We wanted to wear the sound out on purpose,” Ring added.

How Theo Hutchcraft adores Jeremy Irons

theo_hutchcraft
Hurts band member Theo Hutchcraft is a big fan of British star Jeremy Irons. According to Hutchcraft, who was doing a piece for Electronic Beats website, he was once told that the films a person likes and the star a child idolises are the people and things you emulate as an adult. For Hutchcraft, that person is Irons who for him is the consumate actor.

“I found this really great, stark black and white picture of him the other day wearing a monocle and a polo neck by the photographer Michel Comte in an Interview Magazine from 1990“, says Hutchcraft.

“There’s another photograph that I really like where he’s wearing a suit matched with a pair of Nike trainers. It’s something about his demeanor that suggests a romantic back story that I want to rifle through“.

Irons has of course won Academy Awards for his role in such films as “Reversal of Fortune“. He has also played in “The Man in the Iron Mask“.

Said Hutchcraft: “He’s this established Hollywood star so he probably has a beautiful house and a nice car; but it’s about more than the usual trappings.

He looks like he could live in some sort of house in Paris or somewhere in rural France with a vineyard. Or else he looks like you might see him on a yacht or a small canal boat tending to the flowers on the roof”.

And Hutchcraft thinks that while Hurts isn’t a lot like Irons they have managed to fool people into thinking that. “If I’m like Jeremy Irons when I’m old, I’ll be a very, very happy man”.

House music is pretty popular in Europe and one of the longest running pairings System of Survival is over 20 years old. The pair of Alex Carpentieri and Pietro de Lisi has been working together since 1989. The duo is so close, they even live together and they say the secret of their success is keeping it real.

“Our system is to be true. To be real. Enjoy our job, be professional and avoid all bullshit. That’s the only way to survive,” the duo said during an interview with “ibiza-voice”. The DJ’shave been working on a new album which they expect to release some time next year.

The album will feature some collaborations but the pair are keeping tight-lipped on exactly what those will be. According to System of Survival, who recently signed up with Safehouse agency, they never prepare a playlist for their gigs and because of their eclectic music tastes and mental connection.

The group’s last album “Needle & Thread” was released in 2012 and a year later are still pleased with it. The pair said the music is their roots not club music and are pleased that their fans understand it. System of Survival has been playing around in 2013 travelling toSouth America where they played on the beaches of Peru.

British artist Calvin Harris may be one of the most popular musicians right now and being requested to write songs by such artists as Rihanna and Kylie Minogue but his own girlfriend doesn’t seem to appreciate his music.

The Scotsman said his girlfriend, fellow musician Rita Ora, doesn’t like his music, which is dance music. He has said the two are unlikely to produce any songs together as they are trying to keep their business and personal lives separate.

Forbes magazine earlier this month named Harris the top-earning DJ of 2013 with $46 million. Tiesto was named number two on the Forbes list. Harris and Tiesto are to go on a UK Tour entitled “Greater Than” starting in December.

The tour will cover BelfastDublinLondonManchester, and Glasgow. Harris has the record for the most top 10 hits from a studio album in the UK. The previous record was nine held by Michael Jackson.

Harris, who was born Adam Wiles in Scotland, is also a songwriter and record producer. He released his first studio album in 2007 and had a follow-up album in 2009. The Albanian-born Ora had her first release in 2007 when she appeared on Craig David’s song “Awkward”.
