Belgian movie producers take aim at UK

belgian_cinemaThe Belgian cinema industry is hoping to interest British producers and have been making their appeal at Cinema Made an event in London aimed at encouraging UK producers to get on board.

Belgium offers its film industry a tax shelter as well as regional film funds which it is hoped would be an added attraction to the Brits. According to one tax expert in Belgium, British producers are way behind other European countries who are taking advantage of the schemes aimed at the movie making industry.

Some of the movies that have been filmed in Belgium include “Looking for Eric” a movie about the former France international footballer Eric Cantona, “Parade’s End”, and “The Winter Queen”. But the British movie makers have been slow to the uptake where the Belgian offers are concerned. On the other hand, the television producers have caught hold of a good thing with the new UK TV series “Which Is Witch” being shot there.

Cinema Made attracted around 50 UK producers to the event held at Covent Garden in London. Belgian tax schemes are said to generate €200 million per annum.

British producer gets sued

lynne_ramsey

Lynne Ramsay the award winning director of such films as “We Need to Talk to Kevin” has been sued after failing to show up for her latest project.

Ramsay was to work on a blockbuster Western “Jane Got A Gun” starringNatalie Portman and Ewan McGregor but quit in March a day before the scheduled start of filming. The producers of the film are suing Ramsey for£500,000.

The producers have demanded that the Brit return $750,000 fee (£466,000) that she was paid to work on the screenplay and to direct the film. The BAFTA nominated Ramsey was cited for breach of contract and also accused of drunken and disruptive behavior.

Actor Michael Fassbender also quit the film and was later replaced by Jude Law but Law also quit as did his replacement Bradley Cooper. Ramsay is reported to not have been presented with an approved schedule, script, or budget before shooting was due to begin which may have accounted for her departure.

McGregor was later recruited for the leading male role while another director Gavin O’Connorwas signed up.

Star Wars Episode VII delayed

Star_Wars (1)The release of “Star Wars: Episode VII” has been delayed until December 18, 2015 according to a blog post on Disney and LucasFilm’s official “Star Wars” website.

The director of the film, J.J. Abrams has taken over the writing for the movie which could have something to do with the delay in plans. Abrams will work with Lawrence Kasdan having taken over the job from “Toy Story 3” penner, Michael Arndt. Arndt does not seem to be lined up to work on the script with the inclusion of Abrams and Kasdan. He was initially linked to the project to write treatments and its sequels as well as the script itself. Abrams basically dismissed Arndt in a posting on the website.

“Working with Michael was a wonderful experience and I couldn’t be a bigger fan of his or adore him more, He’s a wonderful guy and was incredibly helpful in the process”, a release from Abrams said.

It is reported that LucasFilm wanted the film delayed up until as late as 2016 but Disney refused and problems with the script appears to be at the root of the request for a delay. The script problems are believed to be why LucasFilm were seeking additional time to get the film made. “Star Wars: Episode VII” will start shooting at Pinewood Studios in Spring.
