Paul McCartney wins back rights to Beatles songs

Let It Be – and so it shall be as Sir Paul McCartney has won back the rights to the Beatles songs he lost to Michael Jackson over 30 years ago.

McCartney lost the publishing rights to the quartet’s songs when Jackson outbid him to buy them for a reported £31 million pounds and was disappointed again when they were not left to him in Jackson’s will when the singer died in 2009.

The duo were friends and even teamed up for songs like “The Girl Is Mine” and “Say, Say, Say” before the King of Pop’s move turned caused the relationship to sour.

McCartney, who has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, will regain the songs and be able to claim the titles and earn royalties and licensing money in another five years under the US Copyright Act.

Under the Act songs written before 1978 become the property of the songwriter after 56 years. This means McCartney will regain most of the songs by 2026.

McCartney, who recently married for the third time, following an ugly divorce from Heather Mills, is already worth a reported £680 million.

Back in 2005, Sony paid Jackson £62 million pounds for 50 per cent of the rights to the back catalogue.

It is not known how much the catalogue is worth these days.

Beyonce’s little sister to play Aaliyah

Rumour has it that Beyonce’s little sister Solange Knowles will play deceased singer Aaliyah in a new biopic about the singer’s life.

Knowles reportedly won the part after auditioning a few weeks ago. The movie will be produced by the producers of the 2012 hit flick “Think Like A Man.”

Solange Knowles has few minor acting roles in movies such as the straight to DVD “Bring It On: All or Nothing” and “Johnson Family Vacation.” She also models for the family’s clothing line “Dereon” and also promotes Baby Jamz a hip-hop styled children’s toy-line.

Aaliyah and eight other persons died in a plane crash in the Bahamas on August 25 2001 at age 22. The Grammy Award-winning singer had just wrapped up filming the video for her song “Rock The Boat.”

Although the artist died over a decade ago singers such as Drake and Chris Brown have done digital collaborations with her in recent times.

Aaliyah is estimated to have sold over 24 million albums worldwide and according to Billboard the tenth most successful R&B artist of the last 25 years.

Why Melissa McCarthy is on fire

Good things keep happening for actress Melissa McCarthy. The Mike and Molly star is reportedly in talks to star as female spy Susan Cooper”. This news comes only a few weeks after her latest starring role alongside Sandra Bullock in the buddy-cop hit film The Heat.

The Heat opened strongly the final weekend in June with $40 million and has made almost $170 million at the box office so far. Paul Feig, who also directed McCarthy in The Heat and Bridesmaids, would be sitting in the director’s chair for Susan Cooper” as well.

McCarthy has been on a roll in her last three films. The Illinois-born actress, who has won an Emmy for her TV work, had a number one in Identity Thief earlier this year. The film made $135 million at the box office.

She was nominated for an Academy Award for Bridesmaids. McCarthy, who was paid US$10 million for The Heat, is pretty saucy off-screen too.

In an interview with the New York Times the actress responded to the New York Observer‘s film critic Rex Reed who called her “tractor-sized” and a “female hippo” in his review of Identity Thief saying that she felt bad for “someone swimming in so much hate.” McCarthy, 42, has been married since 2005 to Ben Falcone and has no children.
