This makes it facinating for us to chat to some of the people we find on the site. Today we’re sharing this interview with CircleMe user Deborah Hare. She’s got a really great range of interests, read on to find out more!
Hi, who are you?
Having a degree in philosophy, it’s hard not to get philosophical with questions like this, but for your sake I’ll keep it simple! I’m Deborah, a twenty-something from Bristol, United Kingdom.
CircleMe is all about passions and the things people love. If you could only choose 3 passions, what would they be? Why these 3?
Video games: I’ve been playing games since the late 1980s when our household was bestowed a Nintendo Entertainment System with Mario Bros. 3 and The Legend of Zelda. I’ve enjoyed this misunderstood pastime ever since. Forget the uncharitable stereotypes about gamers—it’s a bigger shame that games are still regarded as waste of time rather than a legitimate way to spend it. This view is so pervasive, yet when broken down it’s a criticism that doesn’t amount to much, especially when applied to other things people enjoy doing. Is watching films a waste of time? It certainly can be, depending on what one watches, how often and for what reasons; but fundamentally so? I’m passionate about games not simply because I enjoy playing them, but because I love to discuss them: their problems, their strengths, their potential.
Books: Books are everywhere in my house-I have enough of ‘em to open a library! Whether you’re reading an engaging story or a thesis on natural science, a good book is always a chance to learn, challenge your beliefs and re-evaluate your understanding of the world. It’s the only way we can connect with the great—and not-so-great—thinkers of the past and engage with them. Don’t tell anyone, but I also have occasional fantasies about writing a book. Time will tell whether the old adage about everyone having a book inside them is true, although I should bear in mind that legendary put-down by Christopher Hitchens: “Everybody does have a book in them, but in most cases that’s where it should stay.”
Food: I know, who doesn’t love food, right? But my job at Flavrbox.com has taken that love and turned it into a passion. The website is basically a digital farmers market and subscription service, championing smaller-scale, quality producers. I’ve learned so much about food since working there, and I have to admit – trying samples is one of the best parts of the job!

Tell us something you discovered on CircleMe that you ended up loving?
Adinna posted a brilliant six-minute animated short here which I can’t say much about without lessening its impact. I will say, however, that it answers the question “Is history written by the victors?” and that I highly recommend you watch it. If you enjoy it, don’t forget to like it on CircleMe!
Tell us something you saw on CircleMe that you would love to do one day?
Due to CircleMe’s Italian pedigree, delicious-looking Italian and Sicilian foods have been appearing on the website, seemingly for the express purpose of making me hungry. When it comes to food I generally pick savoury over sweet, but these recently added desserts look heavenly! I have no idea what cannoli is, but it looks exquisite… and don’t get me started on that scrummy-looking sfogliatelle. And what’s this? Bomboloni, or Italian doughnuts? I’ve always wanted to go to Italy to experience its history, architecture, natural beauty… but I think I can safely add “its food” on that list too.
What do you like about CircleMe the most?
CircleMe helps you find people with similar interests, but it’s the differences that interest me the most. “This guy has similar music taste to me – but he likes I Am Not Lefthanded.” If you know the band, you end up thinking: maybe I should give them another go, since this guy with otherwise awesome taste seems to like them. If you’ve never heard of them, you start up Spotify and listen to the goods, since there’s a more than passing chance you might like them too. It’s these differences that spur on exploration of new (or not-so-new but perhaps in need of a second pass) music, films, games and so on. That’s not to say you’ll end up liking the band—after all, perhaps the only similarity between human beings is their differences—but there’s real joy in this process of discovery, whatever the outcome.
